The inspiration for the programs came from a mix of life experiences in Salento, past Radio backgound from our Radio Director Domenico and new ideas from our crazy, enthusiastic radio Friends. The general participation alone was enough to set us off for a year. Cool! Great for us! But someone had to keep it all together, make it realistic, and actually get it on air. So Domenico decided to give the programs a one-month trial.

La Voce del Popolo: how could this program not have been born? Shouldn’t a radio station also be a voice to the world? A communication tool for stories and  testimonials? A way of simply sharing beauty and life experiences? After months spent in the scorching heat of Salento, the region at the very heel of Italy, the end of the country, where you can’t go no further. In fact, its geographic position reflects its beauty and how it differs from the rest of Italy, as well as its past and present struggles. Rural life makes people deeply connected to their land, and they are full of stories, rare knowledge, and hidden mysteries to share. We found that their words were important; therefore, we wanted to give them a space and, through their voices, bring to light the community surrounding us.

Lento 33: Above all, it’s about sharing Domenico’s passion for vinyl records. For many of us, vinyl evokes nostalgic emotions, but I don’t think that nostalgia is the main aim of this program. In this fast-changing technological world, Domenico’s intention is to bring back interest and curiosity to the audience by encouraging a slower, more mindful way of listening to music. Caring for a record and physically setting it to play also forces you to give it the time it deserves. Trying to avoid clichèd opinions about today’s music, it is certain that the fast access to so much of it, it’s changing our way of listening. The point is not to go back in time, but not to forget to listen!

Italian Music Revival: likely more a professional commitment driven by Domenico’s gut instinct. The listeners deserve a truly original experience when listening to Italian music.  Music that is too often rigidly classified, much of the good stuff, really, gets left behind. Of course, what else can you expect from a man who survived thanks to music in the south of Italy? It’s not about genre, nothing gets left behind. It’s not about searching for originality, nor about disregarding or valorising styles, not even the so-called commercial ones. It’s about looking at music from many points of view.

INEEDLIVEMUSIC! Finally, we decided on the title. Born from the need for live music, the program grew thanks to past experience recording musicians wherever live music was being played. For me, this one came to life as a vision when Domenico first proposed it, before anyone even knew that a radio station was going to be born. I saw it happening straight away. The woods, musicians hanging around, Domenico’s unstoppable radio project in his mind. It all just made sense to me! We will make a radio station in the woods, and record live concerts for our new and great radio show. And that’s exactly what we did!
